Hake Long Line Fishery Rights List Updated

Must read

The final decisions on the allocations of rights and quantum in the Hake long line fishery have been published. The list is made up of 89 right holders who will share a total allowable catch (TAC) of 8621,155 tonnes. Not everyone is happy…

Hake longline rights were originally allocated at the end of February 2022 but four companies were left to wait for a decision pending a request for further information. They were Eyethu Fishing (Pty) Ltd, SLH Fishers Ltd, Carina Fisheries CC and Carpensis Fishing Industries (Pty) Ltd. Three are Category A right holders who have held rights in the fishery since 2001.

List of right holders

The updated list of successful right holders is as follows:

It is possible for the four applicants to appeal the decisions taken by the Minister and these should be filed no later than 16:00 on 9 September 2022. This should be done using the electronic appeal form which will be made available through each applicant’s registered email address.

On completion the form must be emailed to: frap2020appeals@dffe.gov.za

Criticism

Meanwhile Feike Management has taken to Twitter to criticise the Minister’s decisions.

First, that the Category A companies were forced to wait on the Minister’s decision for months despite the fact they have employees, vessel and other financial obligations to meet. Furthermore, that they hold fish supply contracts which they were not able to honour. It was only when her hand was forced by legal intervention that a day before she was due to appear in court the delegated authority decided to grant the rights.
